Sketch for "Boat House with Gold". This scene is from the Pamet River in Truro. I make a sketch in the field, then work on the painting in the studio from the sketch and memory. It is a more direct way of expressing my response to the subject, and it allows the painting itself to have more say in what happens on the canvas.

The painting here is more loosely interpreted, but the sketch still serves a very important purpose: correctly establishing the values (darks and lights) of the scene.
